Texas was just one rebound short. This reality stings, especially when figures like Charles Barkley insist it never should have come to that.
Barkley didn’t hold back after Texas’ heartbreaking 79-77 Sweet 16 loss to Purdue, criticizing Longhorns coach Sean Miller for benching a key rebounder during the crucial final moments.
“I think Sean Miller, who I respect, made a mistake,” Barkley stated on CBS. “You need a big man in there… You can’t afford to concede an offensive rebound in that situation. That’s an error.”
It’s hard to dispute the point when looking at the game’s outcome. Texas had tied the game with just 11 seconds left and managed to get the stop they required. Purdue’s initial shot went wide. That should have sealed their fate.
However, Purdue’s Trey Kaufman-Renn maneuvered inside, snatched the rebound, and tipped it in with only 0.7 seconds left. Game over. The crucial detail? Texas didn’t have their 7-footer, Matas Vokietaitis, on the court.

Miller pulled him from the game due to foul trouble and concerns about matchups, fearing a potential fifth foul could complicate the overtime situation. Yet, Texas never reached that point.
“We did manage to get the stop,” Miller remarked post-game. “But we got beaten on the offensive rebound because of their size.”
Barkley emphasized this point. Because sometimes, the initial stop doesn’t define the success of a defense. The rebound does.
Texas surprised many by making a strong run as an 11-seed, defeating higher-ranked opponents along the way. But as with many tournament games, it came down to a single possession, a crucial mistake.
And now one particular decision is going to linger in Miller’s mind for some time.
