Following nine seasons with the Houston Astros, Alex Bregman entered free agency for the first time last year. He secured a hefty three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, but after just one year, he opted out seeking a longer commitment from another team.
Current reports indicate a lukewarm market for Bregman’s services, as noted by Johnathan Vankin from Heavy.com. Teams are displaying less enthusiasm compared to the previous offseason. Even the Detroit Tigers, who once made a significant six-year, $171.5 million offer, appear disinterested this time around. Bregman may face a reality of accepting a lower price tag than expected.
“However, the market for Bregman’s services, at least so far, with two weeks to go before Christmas and about two months until, appears even softer than last offseason. The Tigers were thought to be Bregman’s main suitors outside of Boston, but at least so far, they have not taken steps to be seen as serious contenders for the 5-foot-11 third baseman,” Vankin explained.
“We’re having a bunch of conversations… we had the chance to see up close what Alex [Bregman] can bring to the clubhouse and to the field.”

Bregman had a solid performance with the Red Sox, racking up 3.5 bWAR over 114 games. Despite a brief stint on the injured list due to knee issues, he achieved a .273/.360/.462 slash line along with a 128 OPS+.
MLB Analyst Urges Red Sox To Sign Alex Bregman Without Delay
The Boston Red Sox view re-signing Bregman as a top priority this offseason. Analyst Patrick McAvoy from Sports Illustrated emphasizes that Bregman fits the organization exceptionally well and urges both sides to finalize a new deal promptly.
“There’s not really another way to shake it. Bregman is the most obvious fit for the organization, and the club shouldn’t wait around to get a deal done,” McAvoy stated.
“If both sides want to stick together, they should settle it soon so Boston then has plenty of time to address other areas of the club. Free agency leads to negotiations and hardball and things like that, but this isn’t a situation to mess with to find the perfect deal, arguably.”

Bregman’s impact extends beyond his offensive metrics. His enhanced defensive skills at third base and his seasoned leadership played vital roles in guiding the young Red Sox to their first postseason appearance since 2021.
