Giancarlo Stanton, the powerhouse of the New York Yankees, stands on the brink of a significant career milestone as he approaches the 2026 season. This year presents a golden chance for him to reach a remarkable achievement.
Currently, Stanton has racked up 453 career home runs, placing him 40th in the all-time rankings of Major League Baseball. He needs just 47 more home runs to hit the coveted 500 mark and join an elite group of players as the 29th athlete to accomplish this feat.
Reaching this milestone would surpass the accomplishments of notable names like Jose Canseco (462), Dave Winfield (465), Chipper Jones (468), Fred McGriff (493), and Lou Gehrig (493).
So, how feasible is it for Stanton to hit 47 home runs this season? Much of this depends on his durability and the number of games he participates in. For instance, back in 2014, he played 145 games and led the league with 37 home runs. In 2017, he played 159 games and achieved a career-high of 59 home runs.
While Stanton has only exceeded 40 home runs in a season once, his performance last season adds intrigue. He managed to hit 24 home runs in just 77 games. If he had maintained that pace, he could have finished with approximately 48 home runs over a full season of 154 games, even while battling double tennis elbow.
Although Stanton missed some time during Spring Training due to recovery from his injury, he has recently returned to action in exhibition games. Notably, he launched two home runs during a Grapefruit League victory against the Blue Jays last week, bringing his total to three home runs in 11 at-bats since March 5.
Stanton shared with MLB.com, “My timing is getting more precise, being able to replicate multiple games. I’ve been able to make the adjustments.”
He further elaborated, “In the past game or two, my timing wasn’t there. I was able to make the adjustments and come back and feel a little better. So that’s usually how spring goes. Put back to back together, put three in a row.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone has also noted that Stanton is showing greater discipline at the plate compared to previous seasons. He is using his experience wisely, controlling the strike zone, which puts him in an advantageous position to launch home runs.
