MLB Insider: How Alex Bregman’s Upcoming Contract Could Shape Bo Bichette’s Destiny

    FOX Sports

This winter, the Toronto Blue Jays are making significant moves, yet their primary goal revolves around re-signing Bo Bichette. The All-Star infielder has officially entered free agency after declining a qualifying offer worth $22.05 million. Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox focus on retaining Alex Bregman. The three-time All-Star recently opted out of his three-year, $120 million contract following a season that had more downs than ups.

As reported by Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, securing a long-term deal with Bo Bichette will take center stage for the Blue Jays at next week’s Winter Meetings. Similarly, reports from Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic indicate that the Red Sox might explore Bichette as a budget-friendly alternative to Bregman. The current situation suggests that Bichette’s future may significantly depend on the choice Bregman makes regarding his next contract.

“This brings us to Bo Bichette, the main character of next week’s Winter Meetings in Orlando,” wrote Matheson. “Bichette stands as the central figure this offseason, the cherished homegrown talent who recently launched a three-run homer off Ohtani in Game 7 of the World Series. It’s unfortunate that his clutch moment didn’t shine brighter due to the Dodgers’ heroic comeback.”

Bichette rebounded effectively this past season after a disappointing 2024 campaign. He posted a .311/.357/.483 line with 181 hits, including 18 homers, and an impressive OPS+ of 129. After suffering a knee injury in September, he made a strong return during the World Series, marking his debut as a second baseman—a new position for him in the majors.

Bo Bichette Seeks Long-Term Deal to Remain in Toronto, According to Industry Insider

Keegan Matheson, an insider for the Blue Jays on MLB.com, highlighted that Bo Bichette is aiming for a substantial long-term contract that would ensure his future with the franchise. While Bichette expresses a desire to continue in Toronto, external offers could prompt a reevaluation of that commitment.

“Bichette isn’t contemplating deals for his mid-to-late 30s yet. This is his prime opportunity, and if the Blue Jays’ proposal falls short by $25 million of competing offers, he might have worn this uniform for the last time,” Matheson noted earlier in the week.

Bichette was a second-round pick out of high school during the 2016 MLB Draft and has made an impact with 748 appearances and a 21.0 bWAR since his major league debut in 2019.
