Phillies Secure Stellar Pitcher Cristopher Sánchez with 2032 Extension

The Phillies and Cristopher Sánchez have sealed a deal that ensures his presence through at least 2032, an agreement announced in the early hours of Sunday. This six-year extension, effective from 2027, comes with a club option for 2033 and guarantees Sánchez $107 million through 2032, which includes $3.5 million for 2026, according to The Athletic. Already designated as the team’s Opening Day starter, Sánchez still has three years left on an extension he signed back in June 2024.

“I take immense pride in being here, and this contract reflects the commitment we’ve established,” Sánchez expressed through a team interpreter (via The Athletic). “This reward recognizes my hard work over the past few years. It represents a significant commitment, and I’m thankful for the team’s decision.”

The 29-year-old has emerged as a key player in recent seasons, boasting a 3.00 ERA in 81 starts from 2023 to 2025. After being traded from the Rays to the Phillies for Curtis Mead in 2019, Sánchez achieved remarkable recognition, finishing second in Cy Young voting last year behind Paul Skenes, along with receiving MVP votes. His 2025 performance featured a notable 2.50 ERA and an impressive 8.0 WAR. In the 2026 season, he’s already a frontrunner for the Cy Young award in the National League (+900, per Caesars), trailing only Skenes and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

“We assumed that picking up years four and five was a straightforward decision,” stated Dombrowski at a press conference on Sunday (via The Athletic). “We couldn’t envision a scenario where we wouldn’t. Now we are discussing beyond that. For someone of Cristopher’s caliber, we preferred to finalize this deal now while he is still at a prime age for us.”

The news of Sánchez’s extension follows closely on the heels of the Phillies also securing Jesús Luzardo with a five-year, $135 million contract, as the NL East contenders strive to maintain their competitive edge around an aging core. Their roster features standout players like Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and J.T. Realmuto, all of whom are hitting their mid-30s, while promising talent like Justin Crawford is making strides onto the team. With expectations high for the competitive 2026 season (+180 to win the NL East, per Caesars), the pressure builds as time remains an unyielding opponent.

Last year, Philadelphia posted a commendable 96-66 record, securing their second consecutive NL East title, though they faced elimination in the NLDS against the eventual World Series champion Dodgers.

This year, Sánchez will lead a rotation that includes Luzardo, Aaron Nola, Taijuan Walker, and rookie Andrew Painter, who is set to make his MLB debut in the fifth game of the season.
