The Boston Red Sox are at a crucial juncture in their infield lineup as Spring Training approaches. With positions like shortstop, held by Trevor Story, and first base, occupied by Willson Contreras, relatively settled, there are still key uncertainties. Triston Casas might start in the minors after an injury-plagued 2025. Additionally, Marcelo Mayer’s abilities provide valuable options, as he can comfortably step into both second or third base roles based on offseason shifts.
Yet, it’s Alex Bregman’s status as a free agent that’s capturing most of the attention. If Bregman stays, he’s expected to take the third base position, allowing Mayer to transition to second base. However, the Red Sox are also considering other possibilities. The Athletic’s Chandler Rome has reported interest in Houston Astros infielder Isaac Paredes. Paredes recently agreed to an arbitration settlement worth $6.625 million for 2025.
Paredes, who could earn around $9.3 million in this arbitration year, brings notable versatility to the table—capable of playing first, second, third, and shortstop. His potential, which includes a standout 31-home run season in 2023, makes him an attractive candidate for Boston.
“This year, Houston might be best served trading from an infield surplus that will squeeze either Walker or Isaac Paredes out of everyday at-bats,” Rome noted. “Walker’s $20 million salary, coupled with his limited no-trade clause, will make him more difficult to move than Paredes, whom MLB Trade Rumors projects will earn $9.3 million in arbitration…”
Paredes, at just 26, is a two-time All-Star and is under team control until 2028. This makes him a compelling long-term option for Boston. While Bregman continues to headline discussions, Paredes presents a flexible and cost-effective alternative to strengthen the infield as they look ahead to 2026.
Alex Bregman Free Agency Tightens to Blue Jays and Diamondbacks
Bregman’s free agency is narrowing rapidly, and it seems the Boston Red Sox are no longer the frontrunners. With Spring Training looming, competing teams are making assertive moves, driving up the demand for top-tier players.
The Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks are currently leading the pack. The Blue Jays are restructuring their lineup with additions like Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce, while the Diamondbacks are actively guarding Ketel Marte, signaling their commitment to acquiring top talent.
Considering Boston’s fluctuating interest, it appears Bregman’s next destination is now a pivotal competition between Toronto and Arizona. The following weeks could be crucial for one of baseball’s prominent free agents as he weighs his options.
