Rising Star Alberto Mendoza: A New Chapter at Georgia Tech Following CFP Glory

    YouTube
The Indiana Hoosiers head into the 2026 season as the reigning national champions, and they face the challenge of defending their title with a new quarterback lineup. Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza is moving on to the NFL, where he is expected to be the top pick in April’s draft. His backup, Alberto Mendoza, has entered the transfer portal and will suit up for Georgia Tech, according to reports from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer.

Alberto Mendoza played in nine games for the Hoosiers, primarily when the team was comfortably ahead, allowing the starters to rest. He completed 18 of 24 passes for 286 yards, achieving five touchdowns and only one interception during those appearances.

Georgia Tech appears to be a strong fit for Alberto following the graduation of their starter Haynes King and the transfer of Aaron Philo to Florida. With Philo leaving for the Gators alongside offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, the Yellow Jackets are in need of a quarterback. Mendoza has the opportunity to step in and contribute to a roster that has recently attracted top talent, including running back Justice Haynes from Michigan and receiver Jaylen Mbakwe from Alabama during the transfer window.

Meet Josh Hoover, the TCU transfer who takes over as Indiana’s QB following Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza.

The decision for Alberto to leave isn’t surprising for the Hoosiers, given that they had already solidified their starting quarterback role ahead of the national championship game. Indiana has acquired former TCU quarterback Josh Hoover, marking the third consecutive season that Curt Cignetti has brought in a starter via the transfer portal.

The first two transfers were highly successful, with Kurtis Rourke leading Indiana to a playoff appearance in 2024 and Mendoza driving them to their first national title in 2025. This places a weighty expectation on Hoover to maintain Indiana’s status as a title contender, yet the Hoosiers appear primed to make another push for the Playoff in Cignetti’s third year at the helm.
