The Tennessee Titans have emerged as one of the season’s more disappointing franchises. Currently, they stand out in a negative light as the only team to have axed their head coach thus far into the campaign.
Following a dismal start of 1-6, the situation has taken another turn with one of their top players seeking a release from the organization—a request that the Titans have honored.
As reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Titans have officially released All-Pro and Pro Bowl wide receiver Tyler Lockett. He will become available for any NFL team to potentially sign starting at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
Lockett, a 33-year-old from Oklahoma, joined the Titans this offseason on a one-year deal worth $4 million. However, the arrangement has not yielded positive results for either party. Throughout his seven appearances this season, he has only been a starter once and has seen a mere 21 targets.
In those limited opportunities, Lockett has only managed to catch 10 passes for 70 yards without scoring any touchdowns. As various teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants look to bolster their receiving corps, Lockett is likely to find new opportunities without much hassle.
Previously, Lockett enjoyed a successful four-year span from 2019 to 2022, consistently surpassing the 1,000-yard mark each season. However, his performance has seen a noteworthy decline in recent years, dropping from 894 yards in 2023 to a mere 600 yards in the previous season. If the current trajectory continues, he’s unlikely to exceed 170 yards this season, prompting his desire for a fresh start elsewhere.
In addition to Lockett’s situation, trade rumors are also circulating regarding Jeffery Simmons following the recent coaching changes within the Titans organization, illustrating the ongoing upheaval in Tennessee.
