Toosii Challenges Syracuse Coach Fran Brown Over Scholarship Fallout

    I AM ATHLETE

Nau’Jour Grainger, known to fans as rapper Toosii, is navigating a complex decision regarding his future in football with Syracuse University for the upcoming 2026 season. Just weeks after joining the Orange’s recruiting class under head coach Fran Brown, Grainger announced his departure from the program. This shift followed a misunderstanding about a potential “walk-on” opportunity mentioned by Brown.

Toosii addressed the situation candidly on TikTok, stating, “No coach, that ain’t what happened. I told you I wasn’t coming there no more, and you felt the need to break the news first before I told people what school I was going to. (Brown) is a bozo for that.”

Originally hailing from Syracuse, Grainger moved to North Carolina during his teenage years, where he embarked on a successful music career. His single “Love Cycle” achieved platinum status in 2020, followed by “Poetic Pain,” which received gold certification. In 2023, he gained even more attention as his song “Favorite Song” went viral on TikTok, achieving double platinum status.

During his high school years, Grainger excelled at wide receiver and as a kick returner for Rolesville High School in North Carolina. Now 25, he had expressed intentions to play as a wide receiver for Syracuse.

Coach Brown recently discussed the team’s 2026 roster, indicating that Grainger might still have a chance as a walk-on. “He’s still considering it … but I’m not sure if that will be feasible with the increasing number of players joining the team,” Brown commented earlier this month.

Toosii disagrees with Brown’s portrayal. He clarified, “That was never the conversation. The discussion was, ‘Y’all are covering my tuition.’ That’s what it was. If you lie, I’ve got receipts.”

Since announcing his return to football last August and opting to take a temporary break from his music career, Grainger has visited NC State and Duke, while also receiving a scholarship offer from Sacramento State, according to 247Sports.

Grainger initially committed to Syracuse on December 1 after receiving a call from Coach Brown. He shared, “For every kid who ever had a dream, make it a reality.” He expressed gratitude for the strength to pursue what he believes in, despite the challenges. “I want to thank everyone who supported me; it never goes unnoticed.”

He reflected on the significance of returning to his roots: “To be born in Syracuse and move to North Carolina at age 12 and haven’t been back since. When Coach Fran called, I knew it was a sign from God. With that being said, Cuse, I’m coming home.”
