The Boston Red Sox are on course for significant improvement after making their return to the playoffs last year, breaking a two-year absence. Although their journey ended prematurely against the New York Yankees in the Wild Card series, the groundwork laid during their offseason reflects a commitment to enhancing their lineup for the 2026 season.
MLB analyst Trevor Plouffe holds a positive outlook on the Red Sox’s performance trajectory, indicating that their offseason moves position them favorably compared to last year. He rated their acquisitions an A, highlighting that, even without landing every desired superstar, they successfully strengthened key areas, particularly the pitching staff and first base.
“A lot of Boston Red Sox fans are still deciphering how their offseason went. No Pete Alonso. No Alex Bregman. You gave away [Rafael] Devers last year. So it was like, ‘Where are we going with this?’” Plouffe shared on the Talkin’ Baseball podcast.

“First base help in Willson Contreras. You fortify that pitching staff with a trade and a big signing in Ranger Suarez. So, all in all, if you look at this Red Sox offseason, you have to like it. I don’t know if it’s an A, but it’s damn close, isn’t it? This team is set up. I think we’re going to be looking at an even more complete team than they were last year.”
Both starting pitcher Sonny Gray and first baseman Willson Contreras were acquired through trades with the St. Louis Cardinals. Additionally, the Red Sox secured left-hander Ranger Suarez with a significant five-year, $130 million deal.
Red Sox Enhance Bullpen With Veteran Lefty Reliever
In addition to their other signings, the Red Sox strengthened their bullpen by adding veteran reliever Danny Coulombe on a one-year, $1 million contract. The experienced 36-year-old lefty joined the spring training camp right away, where the team will implement a rigorous schedule to ensure he’s ready for the Opening Day roster.
“Good job by the front office trying to add and make us better,” manager Alex Cora commented on the new acquisition. “He’s a guy that had a great season last year. He’s able to spin the ball, avoids damage from the left side. Been there, done that.”

Coulombe enjoyed a strong season with the Minnesota Twins before facing challenges after being traded to the Texas Rangers. To accommodate his addition, the Red Sox have moved utility man Romy Gonzalez to the 60-day injured list.
