Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach Doc Rivers Steps Down

In a significant development within the NBA, Doc Rivers has officially parted ways with the Milwaukee Bucks, concluding his role as the head coach. Unlike a firing, this transition was initiated by Rivers himself, as he stepped down after a challenging 200-game tenure marked by a regular-season record of 97 wins and 103 losses, alongside a playoff record of 3-8.

    A Reflection on Rivers’ Impact

The ownership group of the Bucks, comprised of Wes Edens, Jimmy and Dee Haslam, and Jamie Dinan, expressed their gratitude towards Rivers, stating, “It has been an honor to have Doc as our coach and as a leader in our organization and community.” They commended his professionalism off the court and his efforts to uplift the team during his time in Milwaukee.

    Continuing Support from the Organization

According to ESPN, the Milwaukee franchise will honor Rivers’ contract by providing him with his full salary for the 2026-2027 season. There’s potential for Rivers to take on an advisory position within the organization moving forward, signifying that the Bucks value his contributions despite his departure as head coach.

A Look Back at Rivers’ Coaching Journey

Doc Rivers, a former NBA player for 13 seasons, transitioned into coaching in 1999, beginning his career with the Orlando Magic. During his tenure there, he successfully led the team to the playoffs three times over a span of just over four seasons. Rivers then directed the Boston Celtics from 2004 to 2013, guiding them to seven playoff appearances, including two Eastern Conference titles and an NBA championship in 2007-2008.

Rivers’ coaching resume further expanded with his seven-year stint at the Los Angeles Clippers (2013-2020) and three years with the Philadelphia 76ers (2020-2023) prior to his role with the Bucks. Despite consistent playoff appearances, Rivers has yet to lead any of his teams to the NBA Finals.

Doc Rivers’ Personal Take on His Departure

In his farewell statement, Rivers expressed his deep appreciation for his time in Milwaukee, noting, “I have truly loved my time in Milwaukee. Coming back to where I got my start, to a city that has always embraced me, has been a privilege.” He also conveyed his disappointment over not achieving the desired outcomes but emphasized the relationships he built during his tenure and the invaluable support from fans and the community. “Milwaukee will always mean a lot to me,” he asserted, leaving a heartfelt acknowledgment of the city’s impact on his career.
