Chasing the Pack: The Ultimate 2026 NC State Football Coaching Hot Board

    Dave Doeren. (YouTube)

The Dave Doeren era at NC State has officially come to an end. After a 14-season tenure, the university announced Doeren’s dismissal on Saturday, a move triggered by a disappointing 3-4 start to the season and a recent loss to Stanford. While Doeren leaves as the winningest coach in the history of the program with a 98-74 record, the school is now searching for a leader capable of shattering the glass ceiling that has kept the Wolfpack in the middle of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Doeren’s legacy in Raleigh is one of consistency but also of missed opportunities on the national stage. Despite securing four bowl victories, the program never captured a conference championship or achieved a final AP Poll ranking higher than 20th during his decade-plus at the helm. For a fan base hungry to compete for College Football Playoff spots and ACC titles, the administration has decided that a fresh perspective is required for the first time since 2012.

Leading Candidates to Take Over the Wolfpack Program

As the search committee begins its work, several high-profile names have emerged as potential successors. The objective is clear: find a recruiter and tactician who can leverage the current landscape of the ACC to elevate NC State into the upper echelon of the league. One name that has quickly gained traction in coaching circles is James Madison University head coach Billy Napier.

Napier is currently navigating a successful campaign with the Dukes, holding a 7-2 record in his first year at the program. While JMU has faced recent setbacks against Sun Belt rivals Appalachian State and Troy, Napier’s broader resume remains highly attractive to Power 4 programs. Before his arrival at JMU, he spent four seasons leading the Florida Gators. Although his tenure in Gainesville ended with a sub-.500 record (22-23), he proved his ability to compete in high-pressure environments, at one point leading the Gators to a No. 13 ranking in the AP Poll.

The Case for Billy Napier in Raleigh

Napier’s credentials as a program builder were truly established during his time at Louisiana from 2018 to 2021. During that four-year stretch, he was twice named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year and led the Ragin’ Cajuns to three seasons with double-digit wins. His career head coaching record of 69-36 includes a winning record in bowl games and three notable upset victories against top-10 opponents, proving he can coach up talent to beat elite competition.

Beyond the statistics, Napier’s deep roots in the Carolinas make him a natural fit for NC State. A former standout quarterback at Furman, his coaching journey includes eight years as an assistant in the region, with significant stints at Clemson and South Carolina State. Perhaps most importantly, Napier spent five seasons on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama, where he contributed to two national championship runs. That “Saban blueprint” of discipline and recruiting excellence is exactly what many believe NC State needs to transition from a consistent winner to a championship contender.

Strategic Directions for the Coaching Search

The Wolfpack’s search is expected to be wide-ranging. Beyond the established names, the administration is reportedly weighing different philosophies for the future of the program. Some boosters are advocating for a “high-upside” hire—a candidate who might carry more risk but possesses the personality and modern savvy to significantly boost the program’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) funding. In the current era of college football, the ability to attract financial resources for the roster is often just as important as the schemes run on Saturdays.

With the ACC landscape shifting and the expanded College Football Playoff providing more access than ever, the NC State opening is viewed as one of the most attractive vacancies in the country. The school offers a passionate fan base, a fertile recruiting ground, and a proven track record of winning, providing a solid foundation for whichever coach is chosen to lead the next chapter of Wolfpack football.

Final Thoughts on the NC State Vacancy

Replacing the winningest coach in program history is never a simple task, but the decision to move on from Dave Doeren signals a shift in ambition for NC State. The program is no longer content with being a “tough out” in the ACC; it wants to be the standard-bearer. Whether they land a proven winner like Billy Napier or a high-energy recruiter focused on NIL growth, the next head coach will be tasked with transforming the Wolfpack from a consistent winner into a legitimate national threat.
